Vancouver Olympic Centre / Vancouver Paralympic Centre
The Vancouver Olympic Centre/Vancouver Paralympic Centre will be the curling venue for both Olympic and Paralympic curling events during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. After the Games, it will become part of a state-of-the-art legacy community facility.
During the 2010 Winter Games and beyond
The site of the 2010 Winter Games curling competitions is located in the geographic centre of Vancouver, on the shoulders of majestic Queen Elizabeth Park, adjacent to the iconic Nat Bailey Stadium and the Riley Park Community Centre with a breathtaking view of the mountains.
After the 2010 Winter Games, the facility will be converted into a community and recreation campus. The complex will inject new life into the City’s aging recreation infrastructure for generations to come and will include a new community centre, branch library, skating rink and a destination indoor/outdoor aquatic facility and a new home for the Vancouver Curling Club. The adjacent Riley Park Community Centre was built in 1964 and includes a skating rink and the Percy Norman Pool. Nearly a half-century later, it is being replaced by a state-of-the-art design where form and function meld. Sustainable features include new power-smart lighting, heat exchange mechanisms between the rinks and pools and collection of surrounding ground water for use in the facilities’ dual flush toilets. Plans for the former community centre site call for it to be returned to community green space. The facility has been designed to meet the LEEDTM (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold, which is a City of Vancouver requirement for all new City-owned buildings. It is the highest environmental standard for municipal facilities in North America.
The new indoor pool and outdoor aquatic facility were constructed in tandem with this majestic Olympic and Paralympic venue. These new Park Board facilities will replace the Percy Norman indoor pool and provide the City with a much-needed outdoor aquatic feature.
