Deliveries and large vehicles

Goods movement, deliveries and large vehicle movement

Goods movement and deliveries were an integral part to the overall success of the 2010 Winter Games experience. The City of Vancouver found a variety of ways to minimize the impact any temporary road closures and restrictions have on goods and large vehicle movement during Olympic Games time.

The Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unitlink to external site and Transport Canadalink to external siteput together interim plans to restrict the transportation of dangerous goods in downtown Vancouver and near venues. More details available herelink to external site.

Protocols are in place at Olympic & Paralympic venues and select adjacent businesses. Click herelink to external site for more information on deliveries to Official Olympic and Paralympic venues.

Goods movement and deliveries to Downtown

Goods movement, deliveries and large vehicle movementDuring the 2010 Olympic Games, local businesses were able to make and receive deliveries in downtown Vancouver 24 hours a day, 7 days a week it was strongly encouraged to be flexible in timing of deliveries. In order to avoid congestion and traffic, the City recommended that all deliveries were planned between 12 midnight and 6 am. If you were unable to make or receive deliveries before 6 am, the next preferred delivery window was before noon.

Parking and loading zones had temporarily been removed from certain streets in downtown Vancouver. Businesses referred to the Host City Transportation Plan online map to determine if their existing loading zones were impacted. If existing loading zones were impacted, businesses were encouraged to look for alternate drop off/load zones in parkades or lanes.

The City also made temporary revisions to its Noise Control By-law* to ensure that businesses were able to continue their regular operations as much as possible during the Olympic Games period:

* Note: the temporary changes to the Noise Control By-law did not apply to regular construction work during the Games period. Site-specific noise by-law exemptions were required. For more information contact the Licenses & Inspections group.

Temporary 2010 truck routes

To account for the temporary road closures associated with the Olympic and Paralympic Transportation Plan, the City has established the following temporary truck routes to facilitate goods and large vehicle movement during the Winter Games. These routes will be in effect from February 1 to March 21, 2010.

  • Hastings Street: Main to Burrard
  • Nelson Street: Burrard to Cambie Bridge
  • Smithe Street: Cambie Bridge to Burrard

[NEW] Granville Routes

  • Granville Bridge
  • Granville Street from Broadway to the Granville Bridge
  • Seymour Street from the Seymour Street off ramp of the Granville Bridge to Nelson Street
  • Howe Street from Nelson Street to the Howe Street on ramp of the Granville Bridge

NOTE: The Granville Bridge has a weight load limit of 27,000 kg, so these routes are restricted to straight trucks and buses. The City Engineer considers it necessary to designate these temporary truck routes in order to provide alternate routes for essential transportation of people, goods and services by means of trucks and buses to support the 2010 Winter Games.
